If you never win a title, but have a gold medal...does that make up for it?

If you never win a title, but have a gold medal...does that make up for it?

Take Carmelo for example who struggles statistically in the postseason and has never won a playoff series. Does him winning a gold medal (assuming USA wins tomorrow) answer all of the same questions one might have about him that winning a championship would?

No because the star of that team has 3 rings and 5 finals appearances.

Absolutely not. Carmelo needs to lead a team to something besides a first round exit to live up to the hype. If it's someone else on Team USA instead of Carmelo, does that mean they don't win the gold? No way . . .

Neither Wade or LeBron have 3 rings so I'm not sure which of the "stars" of team USA you are talking about.

If the U.S. team had an MVP - and it didn't, of course - it would be Wade. In terms of sheer brilliance, Wade out-Kobe'd Kobe. Wade led the U.S. in scoring Sunday with 27, including three three-pointers (in four attempts). He had four steals.

Fine, winner of one championship and a finals MVP.

I don't know. It's hard to judge guys like Carmelo. He's an incredibly talented scorer who has done really well in the Olympics. You continue to go up against teams like the Spurs and Lakers though and you're not going to get much of a chance to prove how much of a winner you are.

I always thought KG was a huge winner despite the horrible team he had built around him in Minny. I was really disappointed in his offensive game and leadership on that end of the floor in the playoffs. Luckily Pierce stood up like a huge leader on that side of the court. I guess the difference is that at least Garnett plays incredible defense plus good offense while even if we consider Carmelo's offense incredible, his defense leaves a lot to be desired.

It's stupid and silly to play this game in the Olympics.  It was a team effort throughout, and no one really played the same game they play in the NBA.

I can dig for an article and come up with this, http://msn.foxsports.com/olympics/story/8484774/Breaking-down-the-road-to-redemption

KOBE BRYANT: Sure, he forced some shots early on and he gambled too much on defense, but his several ultra-clutch plays in the fourth quarter of the gold-medal game reinforced his standing as the very best player in the world.
    GRADE: A-plus

    NUFF SAID.

    See how stupid that is?

frig ... Vince Carter dominated the Olympics in 2000 .... don't think anyone will ever say his performance there will make up for the rest of his career.

    Just read this :

LeBron James was a key reason why Team USA won the gold and that it is the pinnacle of team achievement for the superstar. "It's the biggest thing for me ever," said James. "I got to the NBA Finals, and I thought it was pretty big for me. But winning an NBA championship never would compare to winning a gold medal for my country."

Easy to say from someone who hasn't won a championship .......

Exactly ...Its stupid to go and call KOBE the star of the US team.

Yeah Kobe had some 4th quater plays but Wade was the leading scorer through the tourny. He scored 21 in the fiorst 1/2 in the championship game. Yet someone makes the argument that getting the Gold medal for Anthony doesn't mean much beucase the star of the USA team was the guys with 3 rings and 5 finals appearances AKA KOBE.

I don't care if people consider Wade the star LebRon the star or whatever but KOBE clearly was not the best player on the USA for the tourney. The mere fact that the great KOBE bryant was on the team means no more or less than the fact that Wade or LeBron were Melo's teamates.

Um, no. The point of Toolatecrew's quote about Wade, in response to Adelman, went over your head apparently. It was a valid point. You were just running to your hero's rescue.

"It was a team effort throughout" Duh...no different here in the states. Doesn't mean there can't be a "star" of the team based on performance.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand it went over your head as well.

I will admit that I fucked up by picking a link with Kobe's name on it, apparently that makes some people here only think of a "player x vs. Kobe" discussion.

My bad, that link also gives other players the same grade.  I only posted that part because Kobe's name was at the top.  I should have realized how fucking juvenile some gnats in this place are.

BTW, lmao @ the thought of even having to ask if winning a gold medal with 11 other all-stars answers anything regarding winning an NBA chip about any of these 12 players.  That's the funniest *** I've seen all year.

Hey everyone, the Nuggets just found the key to dominating the league!  Just sign everyone on Team USA, lmao.

My first post doesn't even imply that. But how do you think his Olympic performance corresponds with the player he WAS back in 2000, when he was one of the top players in the game?

Again, what are you talking about? Who cares why you posted it? Point is the quote was stupid in the context of the discussion, & TLC's quote was not. A few clutch baskets doesn't make Kobe the "star" of Team USA, which was TLC's point -  Not who's the best player in  the game. Totally different discussion. Please comprehend this time.
