A lot of guys seem to be split on this guy and have strong views on him so I thought I'd make him his very own thread. I think a lot of people who weren't at a lot of games don't have a full appreciation for what he does. So here are some stats I compiled from NBA.com, these are places 20-30 on points per 48.

Look at McCants mpg's! He's the only one below 30.... Heck, he's the only one below 34! As I've said, not all players are all things. Everyone wants McCants to be the dynamic offensive threat that he is and also be a shut down defender. It's just not going to happen. Use him for his strength and coach him up in his weaker areas. This team has plenty of time and needless to say, the wins and losses shouldn't have mattered this year. IMO, McCants should've been the starting SG and averaged at least 30 mpg's.

shoddy should have gotten the chance to start more this year. i dont know why wittman kept giving his minutes to snyder because every1 knows snyder is going jet in the summer. they wasted a year to develop shoddy.

Well that's part of my, and everyone's, frustration with Wittless. He kept saying how this year is about evaluation and development, but then played guys like Doleac, Buckner, Walker, etc. I can understand giving Snyder some minutes because there's a chance they could bring him back. But starting him and giving him starter minutes? WTF was Wittless thinking? Again, IMO, McCants should've been the starter pretty much all season. People like to say that McCants did better in the 6th man role, but the fact is that McCants made an obvious adjustment to his approach to the game staring Dec. 4th against the Nugs. He started doing exactly what people were asking him to do; quit just hoisting 3's. Prior to that, if his shot was off, not only did he not do anything else to help the team, but you could see him get frustrated and try to shoot himself out of his slumps, thus hurting the team with more missed 3 pt'ers. But that night, I've never heard whether someone got in his ear or something in his mind just put it all together, he started driving to the rim. He started dishing off. It was great to see. It was shortly after that, that he went out with an ankle injury. And when he came back from that injury, Wittless had him coming off the bench. They always say you don't lose your starting spot due to injury ...but that's apparently if your name isn't Rashad McCants and your coach isn't Randy Wittless. Now I will say, that this is all from my memory, no going back and checking my facts. So some of my time tables might be a bit off. But that is basically the jist of what happened, to the best of my memory. And although my seats weren't as good as Stephens... they weren't much worse.

At 82games.com, they have the Wolves 5-man units and the stats for each unit. In the first table, at the far right, they have the "win percentage" for the unit. A "win" occurred when the unit outscored its opponents, and a "loss" occurred when the unit was outscored by its opponent. Of the 20 different 5-man units, there are only 4 that have a winning percentage greater than 50%. What are those 4 units? - Telfair-McCants-Brewer-Smith-Jefferson (60%)
- Foye-McCants-Snyder-Gomes-Jefferson (58%)
- Jaric-McCants-Snyder-Gomes-Jefferson (55.5%)
- Foye-McCants-Brewer-Smith-Richard (54.5%)
Anyone notice a similar theme? Yep, it's McCants. Another stat: units #1,#2,#3 are the top units in terms of offensive efficiency (measured in pts per possession), with 1.23, 1.18, and 1.19 respectively.
I'm doing some more analysis on this data which I'll make a separate thread about later.

Yep, it's the same way if you look under the lenavo stats at NBA.com. There they have the best team by team 5, 4, 3, and 2 man units on every team. McCants is on the top two or more in every category. Stats don't tell everything, but they tell a lot. Even if you go to 82games.com and look at the teams defensive points given up when he is on the court, we give up less than we score and he is the only one on the team to have that stat.

Agree that sometimes Mccants does not always play defense. But he is still a great player and should have gotten more Minutes in games this year than Marko.

I agree that McCants should have been starting this season, but to be fair, it was Jaric that was taking his minutes, not Snyder. If Snyder was taking minutes away from anyone, it was Brewer.

That's a great point. If the Wolves can make ONE trade this off season, I hope to hell it's Jaric.....
