Posey Leaves Celtics ... What's Next?

Now that James Posey has left the Boston Celtics, the Cs have to fill his shoes. While they should be able to find another shooter, his perimeter defense will be sorely missed. Who do you think the Celtics should sign? Tony Allen is still an option. Does Tony deserve another chance?

I think you should look into Bonzi.

Tony is still an option.  I think the Celtics would rather have a guy who can hit the three-pointer on kick-outs.  I listed a bunch of options on another thread a couple days ago:

Josh Childress (restricted; no one is sure if Atlanta would match the full MLE to bring him back as a backup)
Matt Barnes (can swing over to PF like Posey does)
    Devin Brown
    Bonzi Wells
    Kelanna Azubuike
    Quinton Ross
    Jarvis Hayes
    Ricky Davis

But isn't Bonzi a headcase?  Please correct me if I'm wrong.  I'm sure he still has a lot left in him. I thought he was almost resurrected when Adelman took over Houston only to be traded near deadline.

Re: Posey Leaves Celtics ... What's Next?

Bonzi is definitely a head case, but on a team with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen there's a good chance he stays in line. We've seen just how good Bonzi can be. In James Posey the Celtics lost someone who had to be respected on the offensive side of the court and a solid defender on the other end. Because of his uncommon strength Bonzi too would cause some mismatches, and he's proven his worth on the defensive end time and time again throughout his career. Just like Posey you can put a in-shape Wells on the opposing team's best perimeter player. It makes sense if it works out perfectly, but Bonzi is such a question mark. He's been pretty disappointing since that amazing playoff series against the Spurs a few years ago.

Get Bonzi under the right coach or in the right circumstances and he will produce for you.

The only places he has had problems were Portland and Houston under Van Gundy. Everybody in Portland were headcases, that team was in complete disorder. And for Van Gundy, Bonzi showed up out of shape to camp and fell out of favor with JVG immediately.

He played great under Hubbie in Memphis, Adelman in  Sacramento and Houston. And did solid in New Orleans under Scott.

In case you missed it, Tyronn Lue chose Milwaukee over Boston and Phoenix because they gave him a 2-year deal.  So expect Eddie House to be resigned.

Re: Posey Leaves Celtics ... What's Next?

He was solid under Hubie, but his departure from Memphis was an absolute nightmare and the two were obviously on completely different pages. If he was great under Adelman in Houston they wouldn't have traded him so quickly. Same thing with Scott in New Orleans. If they were that impressed with him, they would re-sign him. I was really disappointed with how he played against San Antonio in the playoffs.

Houston traded him because it was the right move to do. He was the first man off the bench under Adelman, played a good amount of minutes, did a solid job on the floor. They traded him for three reasons, 1) Mike James was a deadweight and had a high salary, 2) Bonzi was expiring with no bird rights, 3) We got Bobby Jackson who is a better Adelman 6th man and has a contract 1 year shorter than that piece of *** James.

I don't know much about his departure from Memphis. And he did play like *** in the playoffs for Nawlins. If Doc and the Celtics can get him under control, they would be signing a solid player.

Re: Posey Leaves Celtics ... What's Next?

If Bonzi Wells is at the top of his game for the price that Houston was paying him you don't let him go in a deal like that. I take a focused, at the top of his game Bonzi Wells before I take Bobby Jackson. The situation in Memphis was actually between him and Fratello. Bonzi ended up getting suspended for a playoff game and ended up not playing the rest of the series.I'm in agreement with you about Boston, and they could actually be one of the best situations for him. It'd be interesting to see if the Lakers make a run at him if they cannot resign Vujacic.

Maybe not top of his game (top of his game was that playoff series for Sacramento against the Spurs in which he was scoring and rebounding like a madman on steroids), but he did play solid in Houston. I just don't believe he fell out of favor with Houston as he was still playing alot of minutes the games prior to being traded. He was traded for salary reasons. To unload Mike James' deal. The chance that the Rockets would re-sign Bonzi with no caproom and only the MLE to spend were slim (especially with Landry expiring), so trading him wasn't the dumbest move (I doubt he would've re-signed).

He was averaging 9.2 PPG and 5.1 RPG in 22 MPG for Houston before being traded. He was the team's 6th man. Yes, I would take Bonzi over Bobby Jackson but Bobby Jackson helps clear James' ugly contract while being an above average backup combo-guard for this team. He was just a better fit position wise and fits better into Adelman's system.

The Celtics are reportedly talking to Matt Barnes, Bonzi Wells, Bostjan Nachbar, and Maurice Evans.  This is according to a few different reports.  I'm not sure whether anyone really knows the Celtics are talking to these four, or if these are just a bunch of names one reporter thought of as available guys, and everyone else is tagging onto that reporter's work as though it's something real.  I mean, the Globe has had Frank Dell'appa, who's mainly a soccer writer, putting these names out there the last couple of days.  I don't like Nachbar -- the only season he's been even half decent was two years ago.  The other guys are solid.

Azubuike has signed an offer sheet with the Clippers.

I didn't even know Mo Evans was an FA. He would be a solid pickup.

Rumor has it that your Posey replacement will be Darius Miles.

Re: Posey Leaves Celtics ... What's Next?

A smaller option could be Michael Finley.  "Fin" would provide Coach Glenn Rivers with the first true fire-power he has had in a 6th man role since having "Ricky being Ricky" 3 years ago.  By himself Finley would be an upgrade over last year's veteran role players (Sam Cassell and P.J. Brown)!  Need I remind you that Celtics Cheif Danny Ainge and Michael Finley have a long standing relationship that goes back to the Danny Ainge era in Phoenix, Arizona.  When I talk with Danny Laughing I will give him my stamp of approval on Finley and Miles.

What do Hoopsworld Authors and Members think of Finley?

    Adelman:

Rumor has it that your Posey replacement will be Darius Miles.

The Celtics have been "rumored" to be signing every small forward who's on the market.  They were rumored to be signing all the guys who ended up signing elsewhere.  Now they're rumored to be signing Devean George, Michael Finley, and Darius Miles.  The Celtics gave Miles a workout a month ago, and he reportedly did very well.  Then he reportedly had a great workout with Phoenix, and worked out for Denver.

The Celtics have done their due diligence all along, in case Posey didn't return.  They are probably talking with lots of the available options.  I'm sure they've also spoken with Devin Brown and probably even Shaun Livingston, though those names haven't been mentioned in the press in connection with Boston.  Right now, they seem to be willing to give Tony Allen a bigger role, and limiting the small forward replacement to the minutes when Pierce is on the bench and Ray Allen isn't swung over to small forward.  They appear to be looking now for a guy who would sign for one year at the veterans minimum salary.  Devean George's agent told the media how interested the Celtics were, in hope that one of the teams he's talking to would raise its offer.  Hasn't worked.
